Wind + rain = storm

Outside the storm has just began. Here at the foot of Helderberg mountain in Stellenbosch these storms has a familiar pattern every time. It starts with very strong winds. Sometimes the winds are so strong that you cannot even force the door open. The wind once knocked my little two year old over. She was quite upset by it and then turned around to give the wind a piece of her mind. As if….

Then the rain starts to fall. It is a combination of rain and wind. The rain gets blown against the window and even taking shelter under the stoep does not help. It is a combination of gushing wind and water. Sometimes the gushing lasts longer than other times.

Later the wind subsides and rain gently covers the earth. All noise and fear disappears as the rain caress the earth feeding it live giving water.

Without these wet storms the earth would dry out and a desert would replace this once green slopes and vineyards.

Some 10 years back when we just moved into this very antique house I would get very anxious when these vicious storms started. I would lie awake and listen to the wind hoping the house would stand firm. Wandering when the house will collapse on us and what I would do if the house would start falling in on us. The roof was ripped off once and I remember thinking I knew this would happen sooner or later.

It got me thinking….Life is very much the same. We all have storms in our lives and sooner or later our roofs are all ripped off. Some of us wait out the storm and fix the roof as soon as  it is clear. Some of us try and mend the roof in the middle of the storm almost losing out lives in the contest of staying on top of the roof while the wind is gushing. Some of us never fix the roof and live with the gaping hole always getting wet when the next storm arrives.

And then there are eagles. The eagles who are not frightened by the storms. The eagles who look at the storm as an opportunity. Spreading their wings and mounting the wind. Soaring high above the storm with clear sights of what is happening below. Those eagles that reverently wait on the Lord, that mount up with wings like eagles, who run and not get weary, that walk and not faint! How do they do it? (See Isaiah 40:31 “But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint’)

Have you ever seen the way a 2 years old hides behind her mom’s dress when she’s not sure of what’s happening. Or she is shy or there is danger. She quickly finds her mom and duck behind her. And oh goodness, if she wears a skirt the little one would go and far as hiding under the skirt! Trust me, I know from experience. (Big reason for embarrassing moments. )

In Ps 91 the Lord tell us to take shelter under his wings. Verse 4….

“He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection”

Is that not much the same as what the little girl does?

Should we not see that there is a storm coming and run and take cover under the wings of our Lord? Should we not be under the wings 24/7?

Then why do we run around outside in the storm only to get blown over by the strong winds and think that giving the wind a piece of our mind would do the trick? And time and time again I find myself skipping outside in wind, thinking that this time I will be able to stay standing. And when I do get blown over I have the cheek to get upset for getting hurt.

At this moment I am sitting in that little boat on the water. The storm is gushing and the water level rising. All probabilities shows that this little boat will be sinking in the next hour or two. And yes, you have guessed it well, I am only human, I am screaming my lungs out “Lord Lord, wake up, my boat is sinking!” My guess from past experience is the Lord will arrive with some miraculous resolution to my problem right at 99.999 and He will be all cool, calm and collected. I would looking like Gruhella De Ville. My nice hair style blown to pieces and soaking wet. The moral of the story, don’t wear cotton when going to sea and check the weather forecast… sorry, bad joke.

Moral of the story I would think is to stay under that wings of the Lord 24/7! At the end part of that verse 4 it says “His faithful promises are your armor and protection”

When wind starts blowing focus on the promises. The devil see the wind does not bug you it will go over into the gushing storm. Wind, rain, hale, snow the whole 9 yards. Focus on the promises and shield yourself with faith and use your sword, the word of God. (Ephesians 6:14-18) Know the truth. The Lord your God will never, but never leave you. He will not forsake. He is the same today and tomorrow. He loves you so dearly that he gave His only son to save you. God will redeem those faithful servants. He will protect those who find the shelter in His presence.

Take courage my dear friend. You are not alone. There are many of us whom are facing great battles as well. And if you have found yourself out from under the wings, quickly return to the Lord,  Zechariah 9:11-12 ” Because of the covenant I made with you, sealed with blood, I will free your prisoners from dearth in a waterless dungeon. Come back to the place of safety, all you prisoners who still have hope! I promise this very day that I will replay two blessings for each of your troubles”

The winds will come. The gushing will come. The rain will soak the earth. And then the sunshine will be at the end of the storm again. The Lord will send soothing rain to heal your wounds and redeem you and your salvation will come like the dawn……..

Zechariah 10:1 “Ask the Lord for rain in the spring, for he makes the storm clouds. And he will send showers of rain so every field becomes a lush pasture”

I will keep you in my heart and in my prayers

With love

Ps. I promise to give a follow up whether the boat sank or stayed afloat.  😀

    My dear friend,
the storms will never seize, but our protective gear will become more sufficient with every storm that comes our way. We will be more wise and weary of all the dangers and we will not fret so much, because we know Who is on our side. Life is wonderful, especially after a big storm!!
